#HOTD | Straightened Natural Hair

December 1, 2015

I was in dire need of a trim and could not wait until Christmas. The shears were calling me… But, I never trim my hair curly, always straight. It allows me to see the raggedy ends clearer. And the weather was close to perfect for it.

I am now 3 years 4 months natural, and I’m still loving every moment. Straightening my hair this time was a little emotional for me because I haven’t seen my hair this long and this thick in some years. The last time I can remember my hair being healthy enough to hang past my shoulders was in 2009. Now I have surpassed that length. You know that hair goal that you dream about achieving when you first go natural? This was mine. There’s only up from here. Or, rather, down lol.

The last time I straightened my hair was in July. There is some significance in growth, which can mainly be seen in the growth of my roots.

The color demarcation moved from the middle of my forehead down to my eyebrows. I also gave myself a one-inch trim, making it harder to see the length from the tips. I don’t think my growth was more than average. I honestly believe my hair grows slower than most people. Also, as I’ve said in other blog posts, I’m 5’10”, so my hair length will look different on someone a foot shorter than me.

I think weekly washing has made an impact on my growth a lot. The continual massaging of my scalp every single week really help the blood flow better in my scalp, but the mild stripping wreaked havoc on my hair strands. My hair felt brittle and dry no matter how much I conditioned afterwards. So, I’ve returned to shampooing every two weeks and modified my co-washing routine to make scalp massaging easier to implement.

It has been a week, and I plan to stretch this style out for one more week. I will retouch my ends  again later on, and I may add rollers to get a stretched curl for a few days if weather allows.

Also, I filmed the process. I will be uploading a how-to video on my Youtube Channel.

Merci beaucoup!
