Natural Hairstyle | Perfect Perm Rod Set How-To

February 8, 2017

Deciding what hairstyle to enter my 26th year with wasn’t as daunting of a task as you would expect… I only had 2 in mind: Beautiful tousled curls achieved on a blowout using flexi rods or tighter-coiled curly fro with perm rods. I opted for the style that was most comforting at night.

Deciding what products to use required some research. My last few attempts at a gorgeous perm rod set were marred by humidity and lack of ability to hold the curl. I needed to change up my products in order to make it last. This time around, I opted for a setting lotion and thick gel combo instead of the usual cream styler and light gel I usually use. By thick gel, I mean gel that doesn’t slide down your hand and will lay your baby hairs with just a little rather than a lot. I also opted for a spray leave-in conditioner ONLY. I usually layer my LICs, using the spray first and then following with a light and creamy product.. Using spray only would allow me some extra volume and less worry from humidity.

Products Used

Leave-in – Aqua Du Lait Moisturizing Hair Spritz

Setting Foam – Jane Carter Solution Wrap & Roll

Styling Gel – Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel

Styling Tool – Wet Brush Curl Pro

Oil Sealant – Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Cantu Shea Butter Oil Sheen

When separating my curls, I coated my hair and hands with Cantu Shea Butter Oil Sheen. I separated the curls where they naturally wanted to break apart and then twisted them around my finger to prevent frizz. I picked out the roots and fluff for extra volume, then voila! Fluffy, bouncy curls!

Over the next few days, I try not to disturb the curl pattern and pineapple in 3 sections at night to preserve stretch and curl. I would pick it out every morning. This style lasted me 6 days. The last 2 days, I put it in a pineapple with a headband; the curls were on their last leg, but it was their best leg.
