I’ve been natural for 5 years now, so I’ve been around the product block. I’ve used super inexpensive products to major splurge products, and I truly think there’s great products for every budget. We all develop our favorites, so this list is comprised of just a few of mine. I have been using some of these brands for years and others I’ve only discovered in 2017. Hopefully you find something new to try! Here are some natural hair product brands that I think are worth trying:
1. Shea Moisture
My Favorite Product: Raw Shea Butter Extra Moisture Detangler ($12).
It’s the best leave-in conditioner for my high porosity hair. I use it practically year-round.
2. The Mane Choice
My Favorite Product: Doesn’t Get Much “Butter” Than This Daily Hair Dressing ($17).
I use it for two-strand twist outs and protective styles. It leaves my hair moisturized for long periods of time and smells great!
3. Carol’s DaughterMy Favorite Product: Almond Milk Ultra-Nourishing Hair Mask ($14).
This mask has great slip and makes my hair feel buttery soft. Great for daily deep conditioning.
4. Mielle OrganicsMy Favorite Product: Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner ($14).
I love the minty feel it gives. It really helped moisturize my hair when it was its driest and it felt strong as well.
My Favorite Product: Tangerine Citrus Shea Butter ($15).
Best pure Shea butter out there, hands down. Make sure to try one of their scented ones, the unscencted isn’t as pleasant.
6. Qhemet Biologics
My Favorite Product: Amla & Olive Heavy Cream ($21).
This product is definitely a Christmas splurge item for me because $21 is a LOT for a natural hair styler when you’re on a forever budget. This is the company’s best seller and has nothing but great reviews!
7. Bumble & Bumble
My Favorite Product: Bb. Curl (Style) Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer ($28).
This moisturizing hair “primer” acts as a leave-in for styling or as a curl refresher to keep Wash&Go’s looking brand new. It has UV protection to prevent your hair from being dried out by the sun and even provides a little hold. Get the 8.5 oz. bottle here for ($25) or the 2 oz. bottle here for ($18). The Bumble&Bumble website is even doing holiday gift sets!
8. As I Am Naturally
My Favorite Product: Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner ($12).
This cowash is my favorite because it makes my hair feel soft and easy to detangle, and it smells great afterwards! My scalp always feels super clean after using it, too. It’s great for cooler months because using too much shampoo can dry out your hair when it’s cold outside.
9. Thank God I’m Natural
My Favorite Product: TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask ($16).
This conditioner really brings your hair back to life. The honey makes your hair feel like butter… It also helps to reduce shedding, breakage, and frizz. LIFETIME fav. Get a 12 oz. container here for ($16) or a 2 oz. travel-size container here for ($5).
10. Kinky Curly
My Favorite Product: Kinky Curly Knot Today ($12).
Hands down, best leave-in conditioner after the Shea Moisture Extra-Moisture Detangler for my high porosity hair. They both have the same consistency and keep my hair thoroughly moisturized for long periods of time. It’s not too thick, so it won’t weigh your hair down, giving you great volume.
11. Camille Rose Naturals
My Favorite Product: Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker ($22).
This gel is one of the best for Wash&Go’s on type 4 hair. It provides just the right amount of hold, and your hair only slightly shrinks once completely dry. It doesn’t dry crunchy and hair is super shiny and semi-soft to the touch. This is my go-to gel for W&G’s.
My Favorite Product: Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade ($29).
I use it on straight hair to keep the humidity from ruining my hairstyle. Also there’s just something about the way it smells that I love… It makes my hair a lot less greasy and shiny than any oil would, and it prevents my hair from “sticking together” how natural hair does sometimes when straightened.
13. By Made Beautiful
My Favorite Product: TRUE Intense Treatment Masque ($10).
This is an all-encompassing hair product: literally anyone can use it and get the same amazing soft-to-the-touch hair. I use this product as a pre-poo treatment when my hair is super dry and crusty AND after I shampoo to restore the moisture lost in the cleansing process.
14. Eden Bodyworks
My Favorite Product: Eden Kids COCO Shea Berry Leave-in Detangler ($8).
Y’all, this product is the bomb. I know it’s for kids, but I definitely use it for myself. I have always had issues with breakage during detangling, especially using creamy conditioners which make my hair stretch WAAAY too much. This leave-in doesn’t make my hair stretch to the breakage point when I comb it, even while soaking wet. When I use this spray to detangle my hair, I can feel it when a knot is formed and get it out safely before it breaks off, preventing major breakage. I use this everytime I comb my hair. It smells great, too!
15. Alikay Naturals
My Favorite Product: Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil ($13).
This product will help you reach your length goals. It contains 17 essential oils and herbs specific to targeting hair growth. It also reduces scalp irritation and dandruff. I find it best to combine a hair growth oil with hair growth vitamins for the maximum growth effect.
16. Oyin Handmade
My Favorite Product: Hair Dew Daily Quenching Hair Lotion ($13-$25).
This product is a little creamier than the Kinky Curly Knot Today and the Shea Moisture Leave-in Detangler, but it’s definitely just as good and not too thick. I like to layer this leave-in on top of a spray leave-in when I’m doing protective styling or styles that will last for more than a week.
17. E’TAE Naturals
My Favorite Product: CARMEL Deep Reconstructing Treatment ($20).
This deep treatment is great for bringing life back into your curls. If your hair has been dull and dry, use this conditioner and it will bring back all that lost moisture. It’s also great for using as a strengthening and protective treatment before heat styling your hair.
My Favorite Product: Passionfruit CURL Control Paste ($10).
I have been using this as a gel alternative to lay down my edges for years now! This paste is great for immediate lay down of flyaways and does the same effect as gel to your edges without having to actually let the hair sit under a scarf for 10 minutes. It’s compact and great for travel, too.
19. Girl and Hair
My Favorite Product: Moisturizing Sulfate-free Cleanser ($15).
This product is meant to be used with protective styles and is VERY moisturizing for a shampoo. The smell of tea tree and neem that it emits when you wash it delightful and you can really feel it on your scalp. This shampoo made my hair feel squeaky clean but not dried out, and it’s my go-to for my braids and twists. Click here to see my review of the GirlandHair products.
20. Design Essentials
My Favorite Product: Coconut Milk Leave-in Nourisher ($10).
This product is a great light leave-in that also strengthens the hair. I like to use this when my hair feels too “snappy” or my hair will stretch to the point where it breaks without fair warning. I also like to use it on stretched styles by spraying it on freshly washed hair and letting the hair air dry a little before styling. This way the hair is still protected but it dries a lot faster than using a thicker leave-in conditioner.
Merci Beaucoup! Thanks for reading !
